President's Cancer Panel Report: CT Scans Emit Radiation Levels Similar to the Atomic Bomb at Hiroshima

About 41 percent of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetimes.  About 21 percent of persons will die from cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute's SEER Cancer Statistics Review.1 A 240 page report released by the President's Cancer Panel suggests that the environment may be killing us "the true burden of environmentally induced cancers has been grossly underestimated. 2 The 240 page report is posted at www.thecaringgeneration.com click on "as heard on" and then "articles".

  • Do you know that a CT scan, a common diagnostic test, emits a level of radiation equal to that received by a person standing at less than a mile from ground zero the day the atomic bomb was dropped at Hiroshima?  Americans are estimated to receive nearly half (48 percent) of their total radiation exposure from medical imaging and other medical sources, compared with only 15 percent in the early 1980s.
  • Chemicals from a dry cleaning plant seeping into underground water near Camp Lejeune, North Carolina resulted in military personnel diagnosis of cancer. Rocky areas of ground in Colorado possess high levels of arsenic, which can cause cancer.
  • Pesticides sprayed on golf courses result in higher diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma among frequent golfers.

The report discusses a variety of cancer causing compounds that most of us encounter in our day to day lives.  To protect yourself and learn more read the report or listen to the interview with Dr. Clapp, Epidemiologist from the Boston University School of Public Health on The Caring Generation, June 6, 2010.  Past programs are archived and available for listening anytime.
