  • Do you have a will?
  • Do you have a healthcare directive?
  • Have you been the victim of identity theft?
  • Did you sign a contract which you did not fully understand?
  • Have you had problems with an insurance claim?
  • Have you had issues with unauthorized credit card charges or a charge amount you did not approve?
  • Do you have teenage drivers?

It's always the unexpected events in life that catch us off guard. Wouldn't it be great to have unlimited telephone access to legal advice and a local attorney who can advocate for you and your family?

womanresearchingPre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. was formed in 1972 with families in mind. The plan is designed to help low and middle income Americans obtain quality legal assistance without a significant financial investment. Locally, the Pre-Paid legal representative is the firm of Riggs, Abney, Neal, Turpen, Orbison & Lewis.

For as little as $17 a month you can protect yourself and your family from unexpected life events. It's easy to see the value of this plan especially for general issues that arise every day.

However if you have specific needs such as elder law and estate planning, nursing home abuse, health care, Medicare, Medicaid, personal injury, divorce, adoption or other needs that are very specific I recommend retaining an attorney who specializes in these areas rather than accessing a general plan. The money spent will be well worth the expertise and value you will receive. If you need specific attorney recommendations for these areas please contact me and I will be glad to refer you to an attorney specialist.

The Pre-Paid Legal plan includes unlimited telephone access for questions, letters and phone calls made on your behalf, contract and document review, preparation of a will, living will and health care power of attorney and more.

An Identity Theft plan is also available offering protection of your personal information, access to your credit report, continuous credit monitoring and identity restoration in the event that your personal information is accessed and used by an unauthorized user.

The Value of Life and the Importance of Legal Health Care Planning

Martin wants to rehabilitate his father. Henry was an active 93 year old until he had a stroke last August. At the time there was no thought that his father would have health issues. Nor were there preparations made for the legal needs associated with his father's medical care. Henry did not have a will, living will or health care directive. Fortunately he recovered and was able to make decisions for himself, however if this did not occur, Martin would have been unable to made decisions for the care of his father. At the same time, Martin realized that he needed to make preparations for his own legal health care needs.

A health care directive allows an individual to appoint someone to make decisions for them on their behalf in the event that they become unable to make decisions for themselves. A living will states exactly what an individual would want to happen in the event that they become unconscious and are unable to make decisions. Many individuals choose not to have unnecessary life sustaining measures if there is little or no chance they will recover. These decisions are highly personal and very important, yet many individuals lack education about the importance of planning. Through a Pre-Paid Legal plan or your own personal attorney you can make arrangements to have these documents completed.

Henry was able to return home after a hospitalization and a nursing home stay. In spite of having physical and occupational therapy at home, Henry continued to decline. Martin works nights so he can be home during the day to care for his father; he is fortunate to sleep six hours a day. His wife works during the day while their children attend school. Martin's desire to care for his father has caused a strain on the family and the physical stress on Martin is visible.

Your Identity Can Disappears In Seconds - Protecting Your Identity With a Pre-Paid Legal Plan

You are a busy person. In the course of a day you purchase a morning cup of coffee at Starbucks, put gas in your car at the local Conoco station, make an online purchase, open your mail and toss it in the trash, buy groceries on your way home from work. If you're an older individual who is retired you may receive telephone solicitation calls, mail from charities needing donations or a friendly e-mail from your bank wanting to confirm your personal information. We all complete multiple activities in a single day that can compromise our identity and our financial well being.

According to the Federal Trade Commission below are ways that identity thieves access your personal information.

  • Identity thieves obtain information from businesses or other institutions by:
    • stealing records or information while they're on the job
    • bribing an employee who has access to these records
    • hacking these records
    • conning information out of employees
  • They steal your mail, including bank and credit card statements, credit card offers, new checks, and tax information.
  • They rummage through your trash, the trash of businesses, or public trash dumps in a practice known as "dumpster diving."
  • They get your credit reports by abusing their employer's authorized access to them, or by posing as a landlord, employer, or someone else who may have a legal right to access your report.
  • They steal your credit or debit card numbers by capturing the information in a data storage device in a practice known as "skimming." They swipe your card for an actual purchase, or attach the device to an ATM machine where you may enter or swipe your card.
  • They steal your wallet or purse.
  • They steal personal information they find in your home.
  • They steal personal information from you through email or phone by posing as legitimate companies and claiming that you have a problem with your account. This practice is known as "phishing" online, or "pretexting" by phone.

It is extremely important to be careful with your personal information. Do not give out personal information by mail, the internet or telephone unless you are very sure you are dealing with a legitimate organization. Shred important mail rather than throwing it in the trash. If you're going away for a few days place a mail hold so no one can access your mail. Ask why your social security number is needed before giving it out. I find many situations where it's listed as a blank on a form and is not really necessary, but you must ask the question.
